What I'd really like to do with Apple technology

Friday, August 27th, 2004  by Bill Palmer

Like just about every other Mac user out there, my desire to acquire is larger than my ability to afford what I want to horde. So with that in mind, here's a list of what I'd really like to do regarding various Apple products, and what I'll likely actually do in each situation:

What I'd like to do: Replace my G4 Titanium PowerBook with a new G5 PowerBook the day it comes out.

What I'll really do: Wait until the G5 PowerBook ships, and then scout around for a good deal on a late-model G4 Aluminum PowerBook.

What I'd like to do: Buy an iPod mini to go along with my current 30 GB full-size iPod, despite the fact that the mini's 4 GB capacity is of no use to me.

What I'll really do: Wait until a future iPod mini model reaches 30 GB, and then replace my current iPod with one of those.

What I'd like to do: Obtain an AirPort Express right now, and immediately throw my existing cheapo wireless router in a dumpster.

What I'll really do: Wait until my existing router dies, or until I'm about to go out of town on a trip in which I'll need to have an AirPort Express with me.

What I'd like to do: Pick up an eMac for around the house, despite the fact that I'm now officially a laptop person, just because the eMac is so cool and functional and it would be nice to have one around.

What I'll really do:Not pick up an eMac.

What I'd like to do: get the Combo drive in my PowerBook replaced with an internal SuperDrive.

What I'll really do: remind myself that I don't even own a digital camcorder, so my need for burning a DVD couldn't be much closer to zero.

What I'd like to do: Get my iPod installed in my car in a way that all of the wires are nicely, neatly hidden away.

What I'll really do: Remind myself that before I do something like that, I should probably first do something about the car's blown left rear speaker.

What I'd like to do: Attend MacWorld Expo in San Francisco in January 2005, despite the exorbitant costs of traveling across country and staying in the Bay Area.

What I'll really do:Attend MacWorld Expo in San Francisco in January 2005, of course. It's the only MacWorld we've got, so you'd better believe I'll be there. Hmm, it's only four months away, anyone else with me on that one?
