People often write in to ask me which Apple-related websites I read on a regular basis. It's tough to give an answer because there are many, many good ones out there, I feel compelled to visit as many of them as humanly possible on a daily basis. In this line of work, not only do I need to know what's going on, I often find it helpful to take in the well-reasoned analysis of others (whether I agree with it or not) before attempting to sculpt my own. But some days are shorter than others (especially these days), and there are times when I can only hit up a handful of Mac websites. So in no particular order, here are ten sites that I try to hit up every day, and you might want to add some of them to your list as well:
MacCentral / MacDailyNews / MacMinute / MacNN: Someday, I fully expect Mac Mischief to become such a vital Mac news site that it' the only one that anyone will ever need. But in the meantime, feel free to keep all of these sites on your radar. They each have their own unique style of bringing the news, and equally importantly for you Mac news junkies, you never quite know who's going to break a given story first. All four are updated multiple times per day.
2guysamacandawebsite / As the Apple Turns / Crazy Apple Rumors: Reading these sites is the equivalent of getting your news through Jon Stewart or David Letterman. You'll find out what's going on in the Macintosh universe, and you'll be doubled over with laughter at the same time. These are the Mac-related websites that I enjoy visiting the most.
MacMove: I started following MacMove site when it launched, for the simple reason that Seth Dimbert, an occasional contributor to this site, was one of its founders. But I've continued to follow it ever since, because it brings a kind of unique perspective that I haven't found in a lot of other places. It's essentially a three-man Mac-themed blog (now four, with the recent addition of "Mac Mike" Wendland), but the site ends up being more than that. And at least two of the site's contributors are Macintosh-using educators, which scores points in my book any day of the week.
MacDevCenter: As much as I'd like to think of myself as an ubergeek, the ugly truth is that I know every bit as much about computer programming as my pet dogs do. In fact, while watching the rebroadcast of the second half of Steve Jobs' recent keynote address at the World Wide Developers Conference, I was sitting there twiddling my thumbs...because Steve had begun addressing the audience in developer-speak, and I had no earthly idea what he was talking about. But still, I try to maintain at least a little bit of an idea of what's going on in the world of Mac software development, and MacDevCenter is where I go in hopes doing exactly that. There are a variety of basic guides and how-to's on the site that even a non-developer like me has at least some chance of understanding.
MacSurfer: In the time it'll take you just to glance through the hundreds of headlines on MacSurfer's front page, you could eat lunch. But then, that's the idea behind the site. If anyone anywhere writes anything Apple-related on a given day, the odds are really strong that you'll be able to find it via MacSurfer. And that's exactly the way I want it. The reason that I don't have to visit every single Mac-related site on earth every day, is that I can simply use MacSurfer to identify the articles I want to read. So, in a way, yes I do in fact check every single Mac-related site on a daily basis -- I just do it by proxy.
When it comes down to it, there are many, many other good sites out there...including some that I probably check every day, yet didn't think to include in this list. The bottom line is that, as with anything else in life, you've got to choose for yourself where you want to get your Mac news from, whose analysis and opinions are worth reading, who makes you laugh, and so on. I'm just grateful that you've chosen this site as one of the ones that you take the time to visit. See you tomorrow!
