Come on Bill, let the readers have their say...

Plucked from my inbox:

"It's about time, and welcome! I'm changing my home page to your site. I work for a Apple reseller (an independent) and read these sites every day, and I wish I could recoup all the lost hours chasing down false information, blatant speculation, and juvenile reporting. It's too bad the Macintosh community chose to repay your efforts with childish taunts and accusations, but I am cheered that you have risen above it. Best of luck!"

"IÊhave got to believe that a bean counter somewhere is behind the concept of Mac mini. Someone or something is forcing this on Steve and he did the best he could with a bad situation."

"Keep up the good work! You are correct, very little quality reporting exists anymore."

"Just to let you know -- I read through your scenario about the Switcher trying to buy a Mac Mini and thought 'Yeah, that's about right.' I think the eMac was a great computer at a great HONEST price. If you've ever tried to buy a PC and had to go through the configuration fandango and came to a final cost, you really do appreciate the eMac's value. You buy one -- you're done. You got everything you need. I don't think think it would be as easy to explain why to buy a Mini."

"You must understand, no one is allowed to utter even a slight criticism of Apple, least of all an Apple fan."

"I do agree with most of your points claiming that it's a bad product for potential Windows switchers. They are are valid. Windows keyboards are missing several very important keys: command, volume and CD-eject. Hey, I'm a Mac guy and I wanted to use a nice Dell keyboard that had "clickity" keys. Well, first I had to find a PS2 to USB adapter (they're pretty hard to find when you need one). Next I had a heck of a time until I pasted labels on several keys that corresponded to the Mac keyboard."

"I agree the Mini is dumb. Anyone who can figure it out can see, it is a very expensive box, when you add everything to it to make it work. You are correct. Stick to your guns."

"I hope I'm wrong. I want Apple to succeed. I hope no one recognizes what a fraud the Mac mini is but you and I. I hope everyone is dumb and buys these things in droves."

"I think it took balls for you to go against the grain and speak your gut instinct."

"But today when I read your column, about Apple taking it's idiot box and sticking it, I have to admit now that I think you may be right. I never thought about how PC users are used to buying complete systems when they do buy. And it really does seem that some of Apple's best selling computers (the original iMac and now the new iMac) all come with monitors and keyboards."

"Congrats. You are on target and probably alone."

"Your critique of the new Macmini seemed well thought-out. It does seem like a pretty good computer with no way to communicate with it in either direction (input or output)."

"I thought of the very same issues you mention when I was reading Apple's website except I wasn't as creative about the story at the Apple Store and especially about all the points you make towards the end; the RAM, the power cord and the cardboard!"

"Very insightful, thoughtful article on the Mac Mini. While I hope that you are wrong, as a former Apple retail employee, I can easily see the scenarios you mentioned playing out in the stores."

"They should have just cut the eMac price and advertised it and the world would be fine."

"I do reckon Apple sellers will get sick of trying to figure out if a customer has a USB or PS/2 mouse and will just begin giving away PS/2 to USB connectors. I reckon the biggest issue is the keyboard layout. There's no 2 ways about it - these mini Macs MUST be sold with a Mac keyboard to switchers."

"Whether you're right about the Mac mini or not, it doesn't justify the attacks against you at Mac360 and elsewhere. Some of us appreciate the value of critical analysis, especially of the company we love. Keep it up!"

"You make some great points. I can see my dad walking into an apple store and your exact same scenario playing out. Great work but like you said today, I hope you're wrong."
